Thesis
America passed the Chinese Exclusion Act to put an end to the Chinese obtaining the jobs and taking them away from the whites.
Background
During the 1850’s more and more immigrants were migrating from their homelands to America to live the “American Dream”. These immigrants consisted of Germans, Europe, and China. The Chinese were more productive and more hard working. This sparked many of the other immigrants and Americans to become jealous and made them take action by passing the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Evidence & Analysis of Evidence 1
Some evidence that supports that Americans were jealous thanks to this quote from document C”This state of things brings about a terrible competition between our own people. who must live as civilized Americans and the Chinese who live degraded slaves. We should all understand that this state of things can not be much longer endured.” This evidence supports our claim because the person says that the Chinese-man are talking jobs from the "Civilized Americans" and that some thing has to be done to end this.
Evidence & Analysis of Evidence 2
Further evidence to support this claim would be: "By and by, no more white men working in California; all Chinaman -- sabee?". This quote shows that the Americans are mad that all the Chinese-men have jobs and they don't. So if the white race is stating that Chinese-men have all the jobs and they don't then it is likely that they would support the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Rebuttal
Some people say that the Chinese exclusion act was to protect the Chinese. According to Document B it shows Columbia (America) protecting a Chinese immigrant. However they are wrong because Document D says " But the trouble is that the Chinese are such excellent and faithful workers that bosses will have no others when they can get them." This shows why they hired them and why they made the Chinese Exclusion act because It was too hard for Irish people to get jobs. The Irish had competition so they made the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Significance
The Chinese exclusion act is significant because it was the first law in American history which banned immigration. This law affected the population of the variety of races in the United States.
